This model introduces children to the classic barge-type floating wind foundation. The set includes a wide, hexagonal platform with a central wind turbine and three mooring points. Kids can explore how the barge uses its large surface area to float steadily on the water, spreading the weight of the turbine across the platform.
By experimenting with ballasting and anchoring, children can discover how mooring lines keep the barge from drifting while still allowing it to move with the waves. They can also see how the flat shape makes the barge stable in calm waters but more challenging in rough seas—just like engineers must consider when designing full-scale offshore platforms.
This hands-on activity highlights key engineering principles such as buoyancy, surface area, and mooring tension. The Barge Model helps children understand one of the earliest floating wind concepts, providing a simple yet powerful way to learn how offshore wind turbines can stand tall at sea.
