STEM 🔬 👩‍💻 ➗

You've heard of it, but what does it actually stand for and why is it vitally important?

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Four fields that share an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking.

In August 2023, STEM Women reported that only 31% of core UK STEM students in Higher Education are women or non-binary, with a focus on physical sciences rather than engineering and technology, resulting in a lack of representation of women in STEM industries.

To increase exposure, yesterday Gemma Maynard ENV SP and myself had the opportunity of using some of our AECOM social value hours to host a workshop to Year 10 'Girls in STEM' at Ivybridge Community College using our OffshoreWind4Kids models.

It's great to see AECOM and local colleges championing these activities to try and change the narrative of women in STEM, and it was fascinating to watch how the approaches differed to their male counterparts. It can't be a coincident that we had the first group successfully complete the barge build during a 'Girls in STEM' event!
